"Lest We Forget The Living"
CARRY ON ( Victoria ) - Head Office Branch

Carry On had always structured its support services to meet the changing needs of disadvantaged ex-servicemen, women and their dependants, and the seventies and eighties saw an increase in demand for providing low rent accommodation for them. Eighty-three such units are now managed by Carry On, with no in-going fee required, and rent limited to 20% of the resident's income.

The units have been constructed on eight sites in various parts of Victoria, with 18 in Mildura, 23 on two different locations in Ballarat, 10 in Rosebud, 6 in Reservoir, 16 on two locations in Noble Park and 10 in Norlane. More than $4,000,000 of Carry On funds has been invested in these units.

Branches of Carry On have worked with the Executive Board to obtain the sites, construct the units and to manage their on-going operation in matters such as the selection of residents, collection of rents, and repairs and maintenance.

The co-operation of the Department of Human Services has also been a major factor in the units at Noble Park, Rosebud and Norlane, and the units at Reservoir are built on land that is leased from the R.S.L. on a long term basis.

The number of welfare cases dealt with by Carry On declined over the seventies and eighties, and after a slight rise in the early nineties, it is again declining. The support available from government agencies such as the Department of Veteran Affairs, has broadened in scope, especially over the last few decades, and is supplemented by several ex-service organizations, including Legacy and the RSL.

As the children of ex-service personnel grow up there are fewer families who meet the criteria to apply to Carry On for Educational Assistance at the primary and secondary levels, although there is still some demand for the Jim Eilenberg Grants at a tertiary level.

With the passing of time more ex-servicemen and their partners are reaching the stage where they will require help in obtaining low cost accommodation, and this appears to be the probable major focus for Carry On in the foreseeable future, together with the general concept of continuing and extending co-operation with kindred organizations and the DVA.
